When he heard about The Watermill’s production of LONE FLYER: The last flight of Amy Johnson, local aviation enthusiast Tim Williams contacted us to ask whether the team would be interested in taking a spin in his vintage planes from the Amy Johnson era. The answer was of course YES PLEASE!
Tim has two planes: a Tiger Moth and a Puss Moth. The Tiger Moth is very similar to the Gypsy Moth flown by Amy Johnson (affectionately called JASON). Tim took cast member Louise Willoughby (pictured above), who plays Amy in LONE FLYER, out in the plane for a flight over The Watermill, and they even did a loop the loop!
Tim also has a Puss Moth plane (pictured above) which was owned and flown by Jim Mollison, Amy Johnson’s husband from 1932 – 1938. This very plane was built at Stag Lane Aerodrome, where Amy gained her pilot’s ‘A’ licence and took off for Darwin, Australia on 5 May 1930.
Tim learnt to fly in a Tiger Moth and he’s had both planes since the 1970s. Following in Amy’s pioneering footsteps he too has flown to Australia in his Havilland Puss Moth plane, one of the only two still in flying condition.
