Creating disguises in the Wardrobe Department
25 November 2013
Occasionally we have the opportunity to create disguises. The first and most obvious change is usually to the hair, and this may require a wig. We do not have a resident wig person at the theatre, and while I am quite happy to style, adapt and maintain wigs as required, making one is a very specialised job! The first step is often to make an impression of the actors head. We literally wrap the actors head in cling film – tightly, covering the hair line ( usually making sure that they can still breathe). We then mark the hairline on to the wrap with permanent marker. When carefully lifted from the head, we have something resembling a swimming cap which together with very detailed measurements can be sent to our wig maker for her to make a start. Every hair is knotted onto wig lace by hand, it will take 2 weeks for the wig to be made from scratch. This process is followed by several wig fittings where fit, colour and style are discussed in detail to ensure a perfect result.
This year we have also employed beards, moustaches and eyebrows, ageing makeup, false teeth, coloured contact lenses and a removable “paunch” to very good effect.
