Joanna Trollope reflects on her visit to The Watermill

Another beautiful day and a beautiful destination to match. We drive west along the M4 to Newbury to a lunchtime event in the profoundly romantic Watermill theatre – if you haven’t been, buy tickets at once! A historic building in a charming waterside setting and a warm welcome from Hedda the artistic director and Bear her dog, and a cup of tea in her pretty kitchen. There wasn’t a seat to spare in the theatre and my job was made really easy by the enthusiasm of the audience and the interviewing skills of Pat Harper who is understandably a devotee of this theatre. It was lovely to be photographed next to a fibreglass heron, instead of a bookcase for once!
