Horsey Lightly continues to contribute to the creation of exciting, festive theatre in Newbury by sponsoring The Watermill on yet another Christmas show.  

Upon watching, they soon discovered this fairy tale is not the Rapunzel you already know but something entirely original. The brilliant adaptation by Annie Siddons delivers comedy and silliness that is neither lost on children nor adults! This reimagined version is exactly what Newbury has come to love from this regional powerhouse. 

Initially, the story follows its traditional narrative but takes the road less travelled halfway through the first act. Rapunzel and her adopted mother bond over their shared love of plants and their healing properties. While their relationship is initially painted as tender and kind, things quickly change when Rapunzel grows into a young woman who threatens to leave home. Mother Gothel, furious at the idea of her daughter growing up, then uses her knowledge of the natural world against Rapunzel.  

Things turn from bad to worse when Rapunzel meets Patrizio, an Italian prince, who opens her eyes to true love and draws her awareness to her own captivity. Rapunzel and Patrizio agree to run away together but before they have the chance, Mother Gothel casts a spell to blind Patrizio, causing the young couple to lose one another in the Tuscan woods.  

Scared and separated, they encounter a host of mystical creatures, including a magical (and very helpful!) pig. With the help of some baddies-turned-good, they eventually find their happily ever after. Along the way, valuable lessons are learnt about helping others and forgiving those who have changed for the better.  

This story is told by a spell-bindingly talented cast of actor-musicians who play a whole host of instruments throughout the show. It is a festive feast for the eyes and ears.
