BOOKING OPENS ON TUESDAY 28 AUGUST AT 10AM
A fascinating insight into the lives and careers of one of the country’s most popular writing partnerships.
Following the success of The Wipers Times in 2016, writing duo Ian Hislop and Nick Newman return to The Watermill this September with their new satirical play, Trial By Laughter.
Ian and Nick have worked together for many years. Since meeting as teens at Ardingly College in West Sussex where they worked on theatrical revues, their professional partnership has spanned more than 30 years. Their co-writing credits include political satire series Spitting Image, family-friendly sitcom My Dad’s the Prime Minister and British sketch show Harry Enfield and Chums. They continue to collaborate on fortnightly current affairs magazine Private Eye.
Trial By Laughter is Ian and Nick’s third play to be developed with The Watermill Theatre, following recent adaptations of The Wipers Times and A Bunch of Amateurs. Based on their original, critically acclaimed BBC Radio 4 drama, Trial By Laughter tells the story of William Hone, the forgotten hero of free speech - a bookseller, publisher and satirist who was at the centre of one of the most remarkable legal cases of its time.
Ian and Nick will discuss their careers, approach to writing and how they created Trial By Laughter at this special fundraising event. Join us at 2pm on 25 September for an entertaining and insightful afternoon.
