The Mary Rose and The Long Bow
Colin Fox, himself a diver on the wreck, will start the evening with a history of the Mary Rose, and her raising. In the second part, Robert Hardy, one of the UK’s foremost experts on longbows, and who restored all those found on the ship, will discuss with Jon Snow, the importance of the Mary Rose cache and the longbow’s place in English military history.
When the Mary Rose sank in 1545 she had over 250 longbows as part of her armoury of which 138 survived intact, and in remarkable condition. The size of this cache enabled four bows to be used for research, which subsequently revealed their astonishing power and range.
This event will take place in the theatre.
